AlzheimUr Foundation [Región de Murcia]
Research and Brain Bank
RESEARCH
AlzheimUr commits itself to undertake a thorough research in order to develop and certify efficient medicine and non-medicine therapies. The research is based on "sample traceability", medical records, sociological records, tissue samples and the patient's DNA.
An early diagnosis of the disease is fundamental. It could be achieved from a strong collaboration between a basic research and a medical research. Our aim is to encourage both types of investigations in this pathology that would be carried out by teams of scientists who search for the causes and develop therapies against Alzheimer and other neurodegenerative diseases. In this way, knowledge is broadened to the benefit of those who are affected by this disease.
THE BRAIN TISSUE BANK
Our knowledge about Alzheimer today benefits directly from the study of the brain tissue that people have donated, healthy and in poor health. These studies have permitted an observation of how the disorders they suffered during their lifetimes, are connected to the detected alterations in the brain.
Patients with neurodegenerative diseases as well as healthy people can donate to Brain Tissue Banks. In that way, when passed away, their brain tissue remains unaffected and undamaged and can therefore become a useful material for research. The Foundation AlzheimUr has its own Brain Tissue Bank and has within its means a coordinated programme of encouraging donations from all health centres within the Region of Murcia and others in its vicinity. The Foundation's Brain Tissue Bank is the fourth one in Spain and is the only one in the South part of the country.
